Why Devon Farmers Choose Drone Spreading

With so much of Devon down to grass and steep livestock ground, getting seed onto banks and valley sides is a persistent headache for conventional spreaders. We broadcast grassland seed and cover crop mixes across steep and inaccessible terrain that a tractor-mounted spreader can't safely work, with no wheelings and no risk of slippage on wet red soils. For farms across the Culm grasslands and the South Hams, that opens up overseeding and stewardship on fields that were previously left alone.

With roughly three-quarters of Devon down to grass and only around a tenth in arable, most spreading here is grassland work - overseeding tired swards, and applying lime and fertiliser onto steep or wet fields where a quad or tractor spreader struggles to cover the ground evenly, or safely at all. Farms average under 60 hectares, tucked among steep-sided combes, small fields and narrow lanes; a drone brings the kit to the field over the hedge rather than through the gate, which on Devon's terrain is often the whole problem.

Advantages of Drone Spreading

Establish Cover Crops to the Root Level from Above

Broadcast seed directly into standing crops. Seed clover, vetch, phacelia and other cover crop mixes pre-harvest or immediately post-harvest, straight into standing crop or stubble. No extra tractor pass, no compaction, no missed establishment window while you wait for the combine to clear the field.

XAG P100 Drone Cornering

Overseed and Improve Grassland with Zero Damage

Patch weak swards without crushing existing growth. Drones fly over the crop canopy to deliver seed exactly where it's needed, repairing thin patches or improving grassland swards for Countryside Stewardship and SFI actions - without crushing existing growth or compacting the soil beneath it.

Tractor tramlines in a field

High-Output Spreading and Lower Running Costs

Spread up to 1,300kg/h with up to 15% less product wasted. An 80L hopper delivers the output of several workers hand-seeding, rivalling small tractor-mounted spreaders while using up to 50% less fuel and up to 15% less fertiliser, pellets or seed thanks to precision placement - no long refill trips, no over-application.

Drone spreading close up

Spread When Tractors Can't Get on the Land

Hit SFI and fertiliser windows even on waterlogged ground. Waterlogged fields and tight weather windows cost you missed drilling and delayed fertiliser applications every season. Drones operate in conditions that would bog down a tractor, keeping you on schedule and recovering the 2-5% yield lost to soil compaction.
